About Design and Strategy

At my core, I am an information designer. I thrive on taming ambiguity, bringing clarity to complex information, and making products that are visually engaging and easy to use. I champion the needs of my audience and my design solutions stem from that point of view.

My work extends into many areas of design, including User Experience Design, Web and Mobile Design, Instructional Design, Communication Design, Information Visualization, Content Development, Design Thinking and Strategy, Organizational Design, and Branding, to name several.

Design is a constantly evolving discipline, and most projects do not neatly fit within one category of design or another. As a result, my experience is broad, and continually evolving as well.

I often combine my strategic planning and management experience with my design knowledge to be a thought partner with my clients to help them think about their overall strategy.

Strategy and design are a natural fit for each other, and I bring both of these mindsets to every project.

Thought-Partnership

My clients often thank me for helping them to think through their challenges. My goal is to help you to work through ambiguous or loosely defined ideas. We will leave no stone unturned, consider multiple outcomes, and settle on the best path forward. I bring design, management, and strategic planning experience to each assignment, and my customers know they can engage me for a wide variety of communication and organizational challenges.

I approach thought-partnership a variety of ways. Here are some examples:

  • A zoom call or two to talk through a sticky communication challenge, and what methods might be deployed to get the message across.

  • If you are thinking of taking your organization in a new direction. I will conduct some internal research, and write proposed ideas for how to approach an organizational change.

  • When it is time to launch a new program, or develop ideas for how to market a new product offering, I can be called upon to facilitate a meeting of stakeholders where we brainstorm, organize our ideas, and develop a plan of action based on the consensus of the group.

  • I create a set of quick prototypes for user-testing a new product or program idea. I share the prototypes with a select set of users, synthesize their feedback and make a recommendation about how to move forward.

The output of these types of consulting projects can be anything: a proposed strategy, a project plan or presentation, a series of sketches that reflect potential outcomes, or an actual set of designed communication pieces—whatever the situation calls for.
